El comercio reported Saturday that Peru's civil aviation
authoity performed an inspection at the airport on Friday at Nazca. They
reported that despite a requirement that flights be occupied by a pilot
and copilot, that the rule is often ignored. The report stated that 68
percent of the 41 planes operating at the airfield had problems such as
loose bolts and calibration problems with instruments. Also, many of the
aircraft are between 25-35 year old. The airport is the second busiest
